We are a medicare provider. Unfortunately in the vast majority of cases Medicare does not pay for air ambulance trips or life flight escorts. They have a two part process for determining if a case will be reimbursed. The first part is the easier of the two. Medicare will determine if your patient must go by air ambulance if they are to travel at all. In many cases, medical necessity can be proven. However, the second part is much harder to win. Medicare will determine if the patient is receiving adequate care where they are. If the answer is no, then Medicare will pay to transfer the patient to a facility that will provide adequate care but in most cases that facility is in the same town. We would be happy to submit your claim to Medicare for you however.

Many insurance plans, HMO's, PPO's and IPO's cover Essex Air. It is important to check your plan to see that there is an air ambulance benefit and what the criteria is. Most plans require that medical necessity is met. This means that a physician must certify that the transportation by air ambulance is indicated and that transportation by other means may endanger the patient. Some plans require that the transport is a life threatening emergency or that the destination is the closest appropriate facility. In addition, be sure to check if there is a maximum benefit and what the benefit level is ( for example a 80% benefit level means the family must pay 20% of the charges ).

If you’re going into a nursing home, sometimes nursing homes will not hold the bed for long periods of time, so you might have a one or two-day window. But once again, if you can give me a five-day notice, what we can do is what we call a back-haul, which is almost the equivalent of being on stand-by at the airport. You can get on that flight for half the cost, but you may not get to go at the time that you want to go. So there’s something that we call a back-haul and what we do is we tie in both life flight services trips--two trips together, you know i.e. if you’re going from Florida to New York and we have--and I have something else coming down from New York to Florida then you could definitely have some cost savings in both--it’s a win/win situation for everybody because both parties actually get to share on the cost of the fuel.

After the maintenance crew fuels and positions the aircraft, the pilots conducted a pre-flight inspection.
